Colorado Lawmaker Claims Bible Warns Against 'Gun-Free Zones' (Video)

Colorado State Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt (R) claimed today on his "Pray In Jesus Name" Internet program that the Bible warns about gun-free zones.

According to RightWingWatch.org, Klingenschmitt, a former Navy chaplain who also goes by "Dr. Chaps," claimed that law-abiding citizens should carry concealed weapons so that "nobody is a sitting duck."

"The Bible says this in 1 Samuel 13," Klingenschmitt said (video below). "Did you know in the Bible there were gun-free zones?"

Klingenschmitt added:

"Here's an example: It says there was no blacksmith to be found all throughout the land in Israel because the Philistines had banned those blacksmiths, saying, 'Lest the Hebrews be allowed to make for themselves swords and spears.' So by removing all the blacksmiths, the Hebrews were defenseless; they were sitting ducks without swords and spears, and therefore they were ruled and dominated by their evil oppressors. Are we going to let that happen here in America? That is to be determined. I think there ought to be a law."

Klingenschmitt failed to mention there are numerous free countries with stricter gun control laws than the U.S. and far fewer gun deaths. A study in 2014 found that the U.S. led the developed world in gun ownership and gun deaths, noted ABC News.

In contrast, Japan's gun control laws had almost eliminated gun deaths in 2012, reported The Atlantic, and Australia's gun death rate dropped dramatically after the country implemented strict gun control laws, according to The Guardian.

An FBI report from 2010 about the U.S. noted, "53.0 percent [of gun victims] were killed by someone they knew (acquaintance, neighbor, friend, boyfriend, etc.); 24.8 percent of victims were slain by family members."
