Christian Groups Attack Anti-Bully 'Day of Silence'

| by Michael Allen

The American Family Association, Citizens for Community Values, Faith 2 Action, Liberty Counsel and Save California have been urging students to walk out of schools on April 20th to protest the 'Day of Silence,' a day when students in many schools remain silent to draw attention to anti-gay bias and bullying.

Family Research Council head Tony Perkins is endorsing Milford, Connecticut, Christian Church Pastor James Loomer efforts to have the local Board of Education prohibit any student from participating in the Day of Silence.

However, according to the New Haven Register, the Board of Education, this week, denied Pastor Loomer's request to silence the silent event.

Pastor Loomer said he’s concerned because the group spearheading the programs, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, distributes reading materials to students that promote “promiscuity” among youths.

He described the reading materials as “vile, graphic, promoting foul language, and child sex.”

School board Chairwoman Tracy Casey said the board’s legal counsel determined the district cannot prohibit the program because of First Amendment rights.
