Sister Mary Anne Rapp was recently sentenced to 90 days in jail for reportedly stealing about $128,000 from two churches in Orleans County, New York.

According to 9 News, Rapp also got five years of probation, 100 hours of community service and was ordered to pay back the money that she stole from St. Mark Church in Kendall, New York and St. Mary in Holley, New York (video below).

Rapp told a judge on Monday that she stole the money because of her gambling addiction.

“Despite the enormous support that Sister Mary Anne received from friends, parishioners and her religious community, her proactive approach to her recovery and her involvement in meaningful ministry, the judge determined that she deserved jail time," said Sister Edith Wyss, provincial minister over the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity.

"We feel great empathy for the two church communities affected by her actions. Sister Mary Anne is a member of our community and we will continue to help and support her."
