Critics Attacking Rick Santorum's Catholicism

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on recent attacks on presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s religion:

Rick Santorum is deserving of closer scrutiny now that he is a top contender for the Republican nomination, but this does not justify either misrepresenting, or attacking, his faith.

John Gehring of Faith in Public Life fails to distinguish between the official teachings of the Catholic Church and the expressed opinions of some Church leaders, thus allowing him to paint Santorum as out of step with his religion. How interesting. Gehring works for an organization that receives approximately a quarter of its money from George Soros. Need I say more? So discount this guy.

Santorum has also been attacked by Steve Kornacki at Salon for his “Catholic-infused opposition to abortion.” It may come as a shock to Kornacki that the late Christopher Hitchens was also pro-life, and that Nat Hentoff is proudly pro-life today. Their atheism hardly accounts for their understanding of Biology 101.

The blogsite Huffpost Hill says, “Santorum thinks the Catholic Church isn’t conservative enough, which is kind of like thinking Megadeth doesn’t thrash hard enough.” Guess that means Santorum is a very Catholic kind of guy (Megadeth is a heavy metal band—I had to look it up). Should Santorum therefore be disqualified? Irin Carmon at Salon no doubt thinks so: “Rick Santorum is coming for your contraception.” Probably around midnight.

Linda Hirshman, also at Salon, is having a stroke: “That an advocate of legislating strict Roman Catholic sexual doctrine came within eight votes of winning…warrants attention.” Yeah, if this Catholic makes it to the White House, he’ll seek stimulus money for mandatory chastity belts.

Let’s face it, the left want a religious test for president—they want to exclude all religious candidates. Which explains their love affair with Obama.

I don't care if he is

I don't care if he is Catholic. Good grief. Another religious issue. This is America, it's not like who ever is elected for the White House is going to force us to become what ever religious faith they are. Like I said in an earlier post, as with the Mormons, the Catholics are not committing homicide bombings or committing any other sort of violent act so let the man be. I am so fed up with the petty nitpicking. We have real issues in this country that are far more important than what religion a candidate is. If these politicians and media moguls would stay on the important topics, maybe we could get to the solutions much quicker.

UM, NO ding dong. Why not tell Ricky to look at what he said about JFK's stance on his religion when he was being pummeled BY THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT, and running for President.

(On Sept. 12, 1960, presidential candidate John F. Kennedy gave a major speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, a group of Protestant ministers, on the issue of his religion. At the time, many Protestants questioned whether Kennedy's Roman Catholic faith would allow him to make important national decisions as president independent of the church. Kennedy addressed those concerns before a skeptical audience of Protestant clergy. EXCERPT: "I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute, where no Catholic prelate would tell the president (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote; where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference; and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the president who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.")

BTW, it has been and always will be the RELIGIOUS RIGHT aka CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS who ALWAYS demonize the minority. They did it to Thomas Jefferson, JFK and even Hitler used them for his political purposes.

To say it is part of the "Lefts" agenda just shows your ignorance on what being "on the left" means. Ill give you a few hints:

It means people are more conservative in the way that privacy is respected and the government should stay out of our homes, bodies and bedrooms.

It means when the US Constitution mentions "We the People", they understand this, which is opposite of unregulated, free market, conservative (usually christian)capitalism where "Profits Before People" is the mantra.

It means when the 14th Amendment is provided: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." That this means people should be treaty equal.

It means when the Declaration of Independence is provided: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal," though it is not used as a legal document like the US Constitution, still, it means what is says; all men are created equal.

It means they support the 'Equal Rights Amendment' most conservative Christians are against, yet they gladly supported making gays legally unequal in the states Constitutions they reside: "The amendment has been reintroduced in every session of Congress since 1982. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) championed it in the Senate during the 99th Congress through the 110th Congress. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) introduced the amendment symbolically at the end of the 111th Congress and has supported it in the 112th Congress. In the House of Representatives, Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) has sponsored it since the 105th Congress,[34] most recently in May 2011."

It means being on the "Left" is not a ideology of the Democratic Party, though when demonized it is, yet again as JFK states, the left basically means being what America is all about:

If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal.""

It means, again not a legal document in the US governments eyes because of conservative Christians, the Article 2 of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states: "Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status." should be honored and respected by all people.

It means that Liberals have been for all things conservative Christians have fought against in the past and I am sure will continue to like: Civil Rights, Woman's Suffrage, Abortion Rights, Evolution, Separation of Church and State, Public Education, Immigration Reform, and Racial Integration, to name just a few.

SO.....Tell poor cry baby to stop whining, Christianity and all its sect, denominations, and groups are in fact, the majority in the USA and in no danger or being toppled.

As versions of Christianity, Roman Catholicism is as far from the Bible-based faith of Bill Keller and his LivePrayer Evangelicalism as is Mormonism. A common position held among Evangelicals and Fundamentalists is that Roman Catholicism teaches a "false plan of salvation". A long-time Bible-based evangelical preacher such as Keller realizes this.

Yet, tellingly, Keller hasn't publicly stated that "a vote for Catholic Rick Santorum is a vote for Satan" as he has publicly stated that "a vote for Mormon Romney is a vote for Satan." And, Keller won't -- because Keller doesn't believe his own version of "God's truth" commitedly enough to suffer the consequences he knows he'd face for publicly condemning Catholicism and its powerful influences. Mormonism is merely a "little guy" whom Keller can bully without fearing much repercussion. With his "brave preaching", Keller portrays himself as some fearless defender of "God's truth" with little cost or pain.

If anything clearly evidences that Bill Keller is an insincere opportunist, his hypocritical silence toward "the bigger guy", Catholicism, does.

The fact that this is even in

The fact that this is even in the conversation about the elections speaks volumes about the state of the world. Just my opinion, religion belongs in the home, just like sex. You can practice whatever you like, sex, or religion, just don't let either one encroach my freedoms.

The fact is that Santorum is

The fact is that Santorum is waaaaaaay to the right of the pope. He is way to the right of pretty much any cardinal or bishop in America and maybe the world. He is truly obsessed with homosexuality. It is strange the obsession religion often plays in getting people to obsessed with two consenting adults of the same sex, having sex.

Donahue is a liar by the way. There has not been a Dmocratic party nominee who was not religious, to some degree. Obama believes in a god. CLinton believed in a god. Carter definately believed in a god. Other than maybe Howard Dean, all Democratic candidates have believed in a god. For him to say that Dems don't want to excluse all religious candidates, is a lie. Well, unless Donahue considers those not devout enough for him as not religious candidates. If so, he is the one creating a religious test, and the test is someone isn't religious if he isn't as religious as Donahue.

Oh by the way, we should have a president of reason and not faith. A president who appreciates logic and freethought, and not dogma. Jefferson and Madison, deists but men of reason, didn't respect belief in religious superstition or dogma. To think that our secular republic founded by such great men could lead to a President Santorum, is too sad to think about.

Ah, what will that gasbad Donahue whine about next?
