Catholic School Promises to 'Destroy' Invitations With Ellen DeGeneres Picture
St. Andrew Elementary School principal Nancy Matteo recently apologized to parents in Bucks County, Pa. for a photo of Ellen DeGeneres that appeared on an invitation to an Academy Awards-themed eighth-grade graduation dance at the school on June 8.
According to the New York Daily News, some parents complained about the picture of DeGeneres on the invitation.
DeGeneres came out as a lesbian in 1997 and married actress Portia de Rossi in 2008.
In her email to parents on Tuesday, Principal Matteo called DeGeneres a "poor role model" who "lives her life outside the teachings of the Catholic Church," noted Philly.com.
Principal Matteo said she was "obviously NOT thinking" when she allowed the invitations to be mailed.
"Perhaps I was distracted by the Oscar," wrote Principal Matteo. "Once again, I am sorry for my lack of forethought. I look forward to receiving the old invitations and distributing new ones."
"I need every single invitation returned and I will personally destroy them," added Principal Matteo.
Salon.com noted that DeGeneres has "been affiliated with 41 different charitable organizations, who regularly use her talk show as a platform to recognize and reward deserving individuals and families, whose now apparently contentious Oscar gig helped raise $3 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Humane Society."
