Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said on June 13 that President Barack Obama had "fostered this environment" for terrorist attacks like the one at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on June 12 (video below).

Perkins made his comments to a caller on his "Washington Watch" radio program, notes RightWingWatch.org.

The caller said Obama had "championed" the rights of gays people, but is "afraid of offending all the ones that are responsible for all the deaths," an apparent reference to Muslims; the idea being that the president cannot support both LGBT and Muslim people after the Orlando massacre.

Perkins responded:

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

"That's why he immediately goes to this call for gun control and it’s like he is, I don’t know if he’s oblivious to it or he thinks everybody else is, and that we won’t remember that he’s the one that celebrated Ramadan in the White House, been promoting Islam on his world apology tour for America, and so on and so forth.

"I mean, attacking Christianity while promoting the Islamic faith. I mean, where does it stop? He's been for the last eight years increasingly promoting this, and is not a religion, it's more than a religion. It’s an ideology, it’s a political ideology. It’s a military ideology that, look what it’s done. It’s left people dead on our streets and the president needs to be called out for it. The president has fostered this environment."

As a matter of record, Obama has never advocated terrorism or gun violence. He has promoted Christian holidays -- Christmas and Easter, attended the National Prayer Breakfast and other Christian-based events.

The president has also bombed seven predominantly Muslim countries, reported The Intercept, and conducted numerous small wars in the global fight against Islamic terrorism.

Perkins and the FRC have a long history of making denigrating statements about LGBT Americans and opposing gay rights, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
