A group of Florida citizens are calling for a Broward Country sheriff to resign after he hired a Muslim deputy.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has been receiving a lot of criticism after hiring Deputy Nezar Hamze, a Muslim man who is also the director of the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islam Relations (CAIR), according to WPLG.

“I hate Islam. Islam is evil,” anti-Islam activist David Rosenthal told WPLG. “Ideally I would ban Islam in the United States.

" ... I am against Shari-compliant Muslims having any position in the government, law enforcement, or the schools.”

Rosenthal is just one of many anti-Islam activists in the area angry about Deputy Hamze’s hiring. Radio host Joyce Kaufman of WFTL discussed the matter on her radio show and has written a scathing post about Hamze’s hiring on the forum at LeoAffairs.com, which was been viewed over 70,000 times. Kaufman and her supporters even call Deputy Hamze, “Deputy Hamas.”

Attacks on Sheriff Israel and Deputy Hamze began in October when Florida-based members of the Tea Party -- a conservative political movement within the Republican party -- held a rally to encourage both of the men to step down from their positions. Congressional candidate Joe Kaufman was also reportedly in attendance at the rally.

“What the hell his going on with Scott Israel that he hires a terrorist?” Tom Trento of anti-Islamic group The United West yelled to the crowd at the rally, according to Raw Story.

Wilfredo Ruiz, Hamze's attorney, said that the response to Israel hiring Hamze is nothing but bigotry.

“Like him, thousands of other Muslims in America today are wearing the uniform. … I was, myself, a naval officer,” Ruiz told WPLG. “Nobody from a desk can tell me what patriotism is when I have worn my uniform.”

Rosenthal, however, remains resolute in his views.

“The Islamization of Broward County has begunm" he said.

Rosenthal added that Hamze’s work for CAIR should disqualify him from working for the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, saying that CAIR was named as a “co-conspirator in the funding of terrorism.”

Ruiz said that this is not true and that CAIR has never “been related in any way to any terrorist organization to any case whatsoever.”

Rosenthal added that he doesn't believe Hamze has the same right as he does to live in the United States.
