Rand Paul Now Opposed to Medical Marijuana
By Mike Meno
Well, I feel cheap.
Back in May, when Kentucky Republican Rand Paul defeated an establishment candidate to win his party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate, I pointed out that one of the issues Paul used to win over voters was his support of medical marijuana laws.
Now, in a telling political move, the son of Ron Paul has reversed his stance on the issue, telling the Associated Press last week that “he is opposed to the legalization of marijuana, even for medicinal purposes.” (He also stated that he doesn’t think the government’s war on drugs is “a real pressing issue” and that he wants to cut federal funding for drug treatment programs.)
Gee, I wonder if this has anything to do with that episode from his past that’s been discussed so much in the news lately. Is Paul selling out medical marijuana patients as part of a strategy to deflect criticism? Or am I being too cynical?
For the record, Paul’s Democratic opponent, Jack Conway, isn’t much better when it comes to marijuana issues, and has received police endorsements because of his support for tougher law enforcement strategies.

Rest assured, Rand Paul's position has not changed. He believes that this is a states' rights issue. He has said that medical marijuana should be handed at the state and/or local level. I am a volunteer currently working at the Rand Paul campaign headquarters. We have received a lot of questions about the article. Dr. Paul never said that - the article's statement is incorrect. Thank you!

Have a clue.
Rand making statements like this sounds more like a fair weather politician than the son of Ron Paul. From what I have seen Paul still looks like the best choice but he is dissapointing to Ron Paul supporters. Maybe he will wake up, I sure hope so!
I have survived cancer and my wife has M.S. and have no rights what so ever if we use marijuana to help with pain.
Mark Rand off of my list.
Leave peaceful people alone Legalize
Please note from the quote "he thinks" and not "I think". Rand was not being quoted, an AP reporter was being quoted. Better reporting next time?
Kentucky politics as usual. Jack Conway vs. Rand Paul.
Who is the joker here?
The U.S. Marijuana Party of Kentucky is backing Rand Paul for Senate 2010. Or are we?
As of now I do not know , because it seems our candidates cannot make up their mind about what they believe in for the state.
Their minds change according to the demographics of the day!
On the contrary, my opinion will never change.

I agree with the Libertarians on a great many non-fiscal issues, or at least am not too far from them... I must say I *really* hate it when Republicans claim to be Libertarians to get strong early support. They always seem to lose all their values once their under the thumb of the Republican party.

So in effect, Rand Paul is saying to his constituents in Kentucky - if you suffer chronic pain it's OK to get addicted to opiates, but don't dare try marijuana or you'll go to jail!
The time has come to recognize marijuana and hemp for what it is - one of nature's best dietary and medicinal substances. We evolved with this plant which is why we have cannaboid receptors in our bodies. If politicians would do a little reading on the topic, they MIGHT find the rationale science is a good strategy to align themselves with.
