Prostitutes' Rights -- the Latest Feminist Cause
I don't know, I just don't know. The world is a backward place.
Lori at Feministing is celebrating International Human Rights Day today by championing the rights of Indian "sex workers":
In honor of this special anniversary, and in an effort to highlight grassroots efforts to ensure the inclusion of women and girls in the promise the Universal Declaration, check out this fantastic new IWHC short documentary highlighting the mobilization efforts of sex workers in rural India.
Not just adult female prostitutes but "girls"? How terrible.
The foundational argument of this video is that prostitutes must be given such rights as unionization so as to cut the HIV rate in India. Bizarrely, one clip shows prostitutes meeting with wives to argue that legitimizing their trade will help lower the spread of HIV. (Note also that pimps are called "employers.")
Rather, the tired answer the other side hates to hear, to their peril, is abstinence and marital faithfulness are the simple answers to all sexually related diseases, unwanted pregnancies, exploitation of women and girls, and broken homes. How far they go to avoid this simple truth.

Better have sex workers be in a union, protected by law , provided with medical care and given a way out of the sex trade than the current conditions . Feminism is not to blame here, male exploitation of females is. End of story.
I agree that anyone should have the right to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't directly harm anyone else, but the idea that underage girls (I think 18 makes the most sense) should be able to do such a thing is a little disturbing to me.
To hell with the unionization proposal, that's for sure.
You do realize that virtually every sex worker in India was forced into their job.
This is not about allowing prostitution in the US, but about prostitutes in India
When you say they were "forced" into their job, do you mean they were threatened with harm if they didn't engage in it, or that they had no other way achieve sustainable living?
Is there a difference between working as a prostitute because the alternative is starving to death or working as a prostitute because the alternative is being beaten to death?
You point your finger at the wrong problem, Jill.
"Rather, the tired answer the other side hates to hear, to their peril, is abstinence and marital faithfulness are the simple answers to all sexually related diseases, unwanted pregnancies, exploitation of women and girls, and broken homes. How far they go to avoid this simple truth"
Simple truth? There's nothing simple about a male dominated world.
Go preach to the MEN of this world about abstinence, marital faithfulness, etc.
See how far you get; especially in the middle-east and asia.
You'd be stoned (or worse) as a infidel harlot American female who doesn't know her place; doesn't know that she's inferior, and therefore, subordinate to (all) men.
Why do you always point your finger at women Jill?
I'll tell you why, because you too avoid the obvious. It's easier than addressing the real problem: a worldwide culture of misogyny that doesn't value women and girls (even in "modern" western societies).
Fix that, and all the "issues" you bleat about would fade away into history.
