Problems Between Heat’s LeBron James and Nets’ Jay-Z?

| by Alex Groberman

According to MediaTakeOut.com, LeBron James’ decision to join the Miami Heat has strained his relationship with long-time close friend, Jay-Z.

Before we proceed, it’s important to note that this is just a rumor. While the aforementioned Web site says “extremely credible” sources are reporting of this new turmoil in James’ and Jay-Z’s friendship, that “extremely credible” source could be much more “credible” to MediaTakeOut than it would be to the average person.

Nevertheless, it is the offseason, very little is happening in the league right now, and given James’ ability to anger large groups of people, this would not be all that shocking.

Here is the exact post from MediaTakeOut:

July 25, 2010. Jay Z and LeBron James had a VERY close relationship up until last month. Now an EXTEREMELY CREDIBLE insider tells MediaTakeOut.com that their friendship has been STRAINED - and Jigga is HOT!!

Why is Jigga so mad at LeBron. Well our insider explains, "Jay Z was supposed to be able to bring stars to [the New Jersey] Nets - or at least have access to them. [During the time that LeBron was making his decision] he didn't even take [Jay Z's] calls. It made [Jay Z] look like he couldn't deliver to the Nets management."

The insider continued, "If [Jay Z] would have landed a star player, he could have been seen as a legitimate asset to the team. Now they see him as just dead weight."

Well,we're not sure how to think about this. On one hand, it's LeBron's business - and he's gotta do what he's gotta do. But that was kinda DIRTY of LeBron. He could've just gave his man a heads up . . .”

It is important to note a few things: One, James and Jay-Z were actually seen hanging out together the weekend prior to free agency starting. So, really, it’s doubtful that they hadn’t spoken about how free agency would be handled when the time finally came.

Two, James made it very clear to one and all that he would not be giving too much preferential treatment to anyone during free agency. He stayed out of the coaching selections for the Cleveland Cavaliers, didn’t do much bargaining with the Chicago Bulls and most likely told Jay-Z ahead of time that he would have to be as impartial as possible for this process. Not to mention, he did kind of give his friend a boost by allowing the New Jersey Nets to be the first team to meet with him once free agency struck.

While it’s not completely out of question that being unable to pull in James’ took some of the glimmer off Jay-Z in the eyes of the team’s majority owner, Mikhail Prokhorov, this article is probably overstating just how much. The Russian billionaire is far too intelligent of a man to have really believed that James would be interested in spending two years in New Jersey on a team that reigned as the worst in the league last year.

That said, take what you will from this rumor.
