On Dec. 8, White House press secretary Josh Earnest slammed Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump for his statement that Muslims, refugees or not, should be barred from entering the United States.
"What Donald Trump said yesterday disqualifies him from serving as president," Earnest said, according to the Washington Examiner. The press secretary also noted that every president’s first act is "swearing an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
“The Trump campaign for months now has had a 'dustbin of history'-like quality to it," Earnest said.
"From the vacuous sloganeering to the outright lies to even the fake hair, the whole carnival-barker routine that we've seen for some time now. The question now is about the rest of the Republican Party and whether or not they're going to be dragged into the dustbin of history with him. And right now, the trajectory is not very good.”

Earnest also suggested the GOP dump Trump. "They should say right now that they would not support Donald Trump for president,” he said of the other Republican White House-hopefuls. "Republican candidates to stand by their pledge, that in and of itself is disqualifying.”
Although the White House doesn’t have the power to disqualify presidential candidates, other candidates have been denouncing Trump, although many of them pledged to support him if he wins with GOP nomination, NBC News reported.
“Donald Trump is unhinged. His ‘policy’ proposals are not serious,” former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush tweeted.
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida also took to Twitter to criticize Trump’s proposal. “I disagree with Donald Trump's latest proposal. His habit of making offensive and outlandish statements will not bring Americans together,” he wrote, adding in a separate tweet that “the next President better be somebody who can unite our country to face the great challenges of the 21st Century.”

Earnest’s suggestion that Trump be disqualified seemed popular among Twitter users more generally -- the hashtag “Trump Is Disqualified Party” was the No. 1 trending topic in the U.S. for most of the day.
