A petition demanding the GOP be labeled a terrorist organization hit the White House’s “We the People” platform, after critics of the party’s approach became exhausted with the congressional standoff.
“Repeatedly threatening to default on the full faith and credit of the United States over and over again every time you don't get what you want is essentially economic terrorism," the petition reads.
A second petition requested that Republicans be arrested and prosecuted for treason.
However, even in light of the government shut down, these petitions are unlikely to be taken seriously. Neither petition has more than 3,000 of the 100,000 signatures needed to be reviewed by the White House.
The Examiner noted that both petitions do reflect a common rhetoric touted by President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who have called Republicans “extremists” in the past for voting to defund Obamacare.
Both petitions also draw directly from a quote attributed to House Speaker John Boehner, who said that he and his party would not risk the “full faith and credit of the federal government”.
The petitions appear to mock Boehner, who could not discourage his party from discrediting the federal government.
