Van Jones: Democrats Lost Election Because Of Elitism

| by Lauren Briggs

Former Obama administration official and CNN contributor Van Jones said that Democrats lost the election because of "elitism" and urged both Democrats and Republicans to reform their parties.

"Liberals and Democrats, we see ourselves as champions of the poor and downtrodden," Jones told ABC's "The View" on Dec. 1, according to the Hill. "But we have somehow let a little camp of elitist-sounding, snobby people come into the party, and it's obnoxious. They talk down to people, and everybody hates it… Everybody knows we have a problem with elitism."

Jones also said that just because conservatives won the election, the Republican party has its fair share of pressing issues too, and both parties need to be "honest" about their problems.

"The Republicans see themselves as the party of color-blind individualism, and that's beautiful," he added. "But they have somehow created a space for a small number of racially hateful people to come in their party. They've got to deal with that too."

Jones was promoting a CNN special he filmed in which he stepped out of his "liberal bubble" and visited the homes of Trump voters to discuss the issues that led them to support their candidate, in order to better understand different viewpoints.

He concluded that it is "unfair" for liberals to say that all Trump voters are "racist," when the majority of his voters in the Rust Belt sought economic change, according to Breitbart:

I'm going to tell you something as a liberal, when those factories started closing, did the NAACP come help? Did Green Peace? Did the National Organization for Woman, did any liberal group come? We as liberals can't be mad. We didn't ask them for a date. We didn't try to say come with me to dinner. So then Donald Trump shows up and takes them out and now we're mad.

Jones has called out the Democrats in the past, saying after the election that liberals refuse to engage with white male voters and instead treat them as "the oppressor," "the enemy" and "the other," despite a sudden economic and cultural shift that makes them "feel like they're on the downside of everything," according to CNN.
