Urban Outfitters has restocked a controversial Hillary Clinton nutcracker, a gag gift that initially came under scrutiny during her 2008 bid for the presidency.
The $60 figurine, which Urban Outfitters is selling as a collector’s item in limited numbers, features stainless steel thighs, “cracks [the] toughest nut” and is shaped like Clinton, complete with her hallmark pantsuit. The box reads, “Don’t mess with our secretary of state,” referring to her previous post at the White House.
The website that initially distributed the item, a division of Eagleview USA Inc., promises to resume sales when, and if, Clinton decides to run for the presidency in 2016.
The nutcracker has been widely criticized for its apparent misogyny. Ezra Klein wrote in Vox that “[the nutcracker] seems like $54.05 too much for something you might find in a very, very sexist Happy Meal.”
This isn’t the first time Urban Outfitters is in hot water for selling offensive wares. Most recently, they sold a 1970 Kent State sweatshirt that appeared to be covered in blood. Many people felt the sweatshirt was an allusion to the murder of four unarmed college students at Kent State University in 1970.
Urban Outfitters has yet to issue a statement about the Hillary Nutcracker, and it is still for sale on their website. The item description reads, “They don't make 'em like this anymore,” and calls it a “deadstock collector's item.”
It’s unsurprising that Urban Outfitters is stocking the nutcracker. Urban Outfitters is run by Richard Hayne, who donated more than $13,000 to Rick Santorum's campaign. It seems safe to assume his ideas don’t line up with Hillary Clinton’s.
