Framed copies of a fake issue of Time magazine showing President Donald Trump on the cover are on display at several of his properties.

"Donald Trump: The 'Apprentice' is a television smash!" reads the headline of the fake Time cover, notes The Washington Post. Another headline above the Time nameplate reads: "TRUMP IS HITTING ON ALL FRONTS . . . EVEN TV!"

The phony issue is dated March 1, 2009, but there was no issue of Time in that year that had Trump on the cover.

"I can confirm that this is not a real TIME cover," Kerri Chyka, a spokeswoman for Time Inc., wrote in an email to The Washington Post.

On June 27, a spokeswoman for Time said that the magazine had asked the Trump Organization to remove the phony cover from the walls where it was on display.

The Post found that the fake cover had been hung in at least four of Trump’s 17 golf clubs: two in Florida, and one each in Virginia, Ireland, and Scotland.

When questioned about who created the cover and why it was displayed at Trump clubs, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "We couldn’t comment on the decor at Trump Golf clubs one way or another."

Although the cover story about Trump is fake, the cover does contain actual headlines from real issues of Time.

The fake bar code on the bottom right of the cover is identical to the bar code shown in an online graphic design tutorial which shows how to create a fake Time cover.

Post reporter David A. Fahrenhold, who covers Trump and his business interests for the newspaper, noted the irony of the president displaying a fake news magazine featuring himself while frequently condemning the media as fake news.

Another mystery is why a fake Time cover was created when he has been on a real Time cover many times.

"I think we have the all-time record in the history of Time magazine," said Trump during a speech at CIA headquarters in January.

Actually, however, Trump's 11 appearances on the cover of Time puts him far behind the record-holder, Richard Nixon, who has made the cover 55 times, according to PolitiFact.

Oddly, Trump underestimated his own number of cover appearances. "I think I was on the cover of Time magazine twice in my life and like six times in the last number of months," he said during a 2016 interview while campaigning for president.
