Trump Slams NATO Allies At NATO Meeting (Video)

| by Michael Allen

President Donald Trump publicly criticized NATO nations while giving a speech to NATO leaders in Brussels, Belgium, on May 25 (video below).

According to CNN, Trump scolded NATO countries for not contributing "their fair share," and did not reiterate the U.S. commitment to the mutual defense provision (article 5):

NATO members must finally contribute their fair share and meet their financial obligations. But 23 of the 28 member nations are still not paying what they should be paying, and what they are supposed to be paying for their defense. This is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the United States, and many of these nations owe massive amounts of money from past years and not paying in those past years.

The 28 NATO nations are supposed to spend 2 percent of their GDP on defense, which only five do now.

"Two percent is the bare minimum for confronting today's very real and very vicious threats," Trump lectured. "If NATO countries made their full and complete contributions, then NATO would be even stronger than it is today, especially from the threat of terrorism."

While visiting NATO's new headquarters with the other leaders, Trump pushed aside Montenegro Prime Minister Dusko Markovic to stand in front of the group, notes CNN.

Trump got the best of Markovic, but French President Emmanuel Macron bested Trump with his power handshake, which went viral on Twitter and drew comments, notes RawStory.com:

Your president says "hmph..." when greeted with a firm handshake.

We have entered an era in which heads of state and government have to spend time strategizing how to win a handshake.

Handshake heard 'round the world.

Trump's handshake legacy is going to be quite large, unlike his hands.

It seems that every world leader has been practicing how to deal with the Trump "I will dominate you" handshake.

It's not a truly manly handshake until blood spatters all over the walls.

Macron did his homework on how to defend yourself against the Trump handshake.

[A] funny gag for the next head of state who meets Trump would be to wear a fake hand that pops off during the handshake.

Macron plays the Trump handshake game well. Looks like POTUS wanted to disengage at one point but French president gripped tight.
