President Donald Trump congratulated Sgt. 1st Class Alvaro Barrientos for receiving a Purple Heart -- for being wounded in Afghanistan -- on April 22 at the Walter Reed Medical Center (video below).
"I heard about this and I wanted to do it myself," Trump told Barrientos, who underwent the amputation of his right leg, below the knee, notes Mediaite.com. "Congratulations on behalf of Melania, myself, and the entire nation. Tremendous job."
Barrientos was wounded with three other soldiers on March 17 at a base in the Helmland province.
Trump raised some eyebrows on Twitter for congratulating Barrientos on his injury medal, reports Slate:

Oh...dear. Really, believe me, no one seeks a Purple Heart.
Hey military, y'all would Eat. A. Brother. Alive. If they did this. Whatcha gonna say bout Trump? Hope his staff learns him up right quick.
Congratulations? Like the Purple Heart is a prize? Trump is an idiot. Most of us always knew this.
Getting shot and injured isn't usually tremendous.

It's rather like if Trump signed a condolence card to a widow "congratulations." Not everything we do to mark something is a congratulation.
So inappropriate. You don't congratulate a soldier for being wounded. You thank them for their service, dedication and sacrifice.
While Trump brought the media along for the ceremony, former President Barack Obama awarded Purple Hearts in private.
In more Trump news, the president had an awkward phone call on April 24 with NASA astronaut Kate Rubins, who set a record with her stay on the International Space Station, reports RawStory.com.
Trump asked Rubins: "What are we learning? What are we learning by being in space?"
Rubins told Trump how astronauts were exploring ways to recycle and conserve water in space in preparation for a future landing on Mars: "On a multi-year Mars mission, we’re going to need to be able to close the life support system. Water is such a precious resource here that we also are cleaning up our urine and making it drinkable. And it’s really not as bad as it sounds."
"Well, that’s good," Trump replied. "I’m glad to hear that. Better you than me."
Also on April 24, CNN reporter Jim Acosta tweeted a list released by the White House highlighting Trump's accomplishments in his 100 days in office. The list included Trump's ban against travelers from several Muslim-majority countries that has been blocked by the courts.
Another of Trump's listed accomplishments was the bombing of a Syrian airfield, which was reportedly up and running two days later.
