Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he finds it a “great honor” to receive compliments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Following a news conference in Russia on Dec. 17, Putin told ABC News the GOP’s front-runner is “a very colorful person. Talented, without any doubt."

“[Trump is] absolutely the leader in the American presidential race,” Putin added.

In a statement to ABC News, Trump displayed his appreciation for Putin’s compliments.

“It is always a great honor to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond,” Trump said in the statement.

“I have always felt that Russia and the United States should be able to work well with each other towards defeating terrorism and restoring world peace, not to mention trade and all of the other benefits derived from mutual respect,” Trump added.

Trump has previously mentioned during his campaign that he thinks he could have a good relationship with Putin.

Putin appears to agree.

Trump wants to “move to a more solid, deeper level of relations” between Russia and the U.S., Putin told ABC News.

“How can Russia not welcome that?" he added. "We welcome that.”
