| by Ray Brown

Consumer confidence is up and President-elect Donald Trump thanked himself for the increase.

“The U.S. Consumer Confidence Index for December surged nearly four points to 113.7, THE HIGHEST LEVEL IN MORE THAN 15 YEARS! Thanks Donald!” Trump tweeted on Dec. 27.

Indeed, The Conference Board said that its consumer confidence index climbed to 113.7 in December, which is up from 109.4 in November and the highest it has been since it August 2001 when it reached 114, according to Fox News.

"The election of Donald Trump has raised household expectations for the economy to a very high level," said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities, according to The Associated Press.

"It remains to be seen whether Trump can deliver," Stanley added, noting that increased confidence could lead to increased spending.

The "post-election surge in optimism" was strongest among older Americans, according to Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at the Conference Board.

Although Trump's election might have had some effect on consumer confidence, the U.S. economy has gradually improved in recent months and unemployment is at a nine-year low of 4.6 percent.

The day before Trump thanked himself for raising consumer confidence, he also claimed to have given the world hope by winning the 2016 presidential election.
