A state representative from Texas is proposing new legislation that will allow for the legalization and regulation of marijuana, due to his belief that “all that God created is good.”

David Simpson (R) is advocating for the legislation, saying that marijuana should be under the same federal rules and regulations as vegetables and beverages.

Discussing his law, Simpson said in a statement: “I am proposing that this plant be regulated like tomatoes, jalapenos or coffee. Current marijuana policies are not based on science or sound evidence, but rather misinformation and fear.”

While there are skeptics of any proposals to legalize marijuana throughout the country, more and more Americans are starting to believe it should be legalized. A recent poll found that 63 percent of those under age 30 believe the drug should be legalized. Almost half of those aged 35-50 felt the same way.

Simpson surprised some with his support for legalization, especially for his reasoning, which he based on his religious beliefs.

“All that God created is good, including marijuana," he said. "God did not make a mistake when he made marijuana that the government needs to fix. Let’s allow the plant to be utilized for good – helping people with seizures, treating warriors with PTSD, producing fiber and other products – or simply for beauty and enjoyment. Government prohibition should be for violent actions that harm your neighbor – not of the possession, cultivation, and responsible use of plants.”

In his proposal, Simpson suggests taxing marijuana, much like the policies in Colorado and Washington, two of the four states in the nation where recreational marijuana is legal and taxed by the state government. According to the proposed legislation, the rate of the tax would be “$200 for each gram of a taxable substance consisting of or containing a controlled substance, counterfeit substance, or simulated controlled substance.”
