Women On 20s: Sen. Jeanne Shaheen Pushes For Woman To Be Put On $20 Bill

| by Sean Kelly

On Tuesday, Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire introduced a bill that, if enacted, would put a woman’s face on the $20 bill by the year 2020.

Shaheen released a statement on Wednesday regarding the bill.

“Our paper currency is an important part of our everyday lives and reflects our values, traditions and history as Americans,” she said. “It’s long overdue for that reflection to include the contributions of women. The incredible grassroots support for this idea shows that there’s strong support for a woman to be the new face of the $20 bill.”

If passed, the legislation would create a committee that would advise Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on potential candidates to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Shaheen’s bill is attached to the Women On 20s campaign, which proposed seven different redesigns for the $20 bill last month.

Some of the women proposed for the potential new 20 were Clara Barton, Sojourner Truth and Eleanor Roosevelt. Supporters of the campaign voted on 15 different women as potential faces of the bill, with the final four candidates being Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt and Wilma Mankiller. Mankiller was the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation.

President Obama expressed his support of the idea during a speech in July.

“Last week, a young girl wrote to ask me why aren't there any women on our currency,” he said. “And then she gave me like a long list of possible women to put on our dollar bills and quarters and stuff -- which I thought was a pretty good idea.”
