Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky compared Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and his policies to Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot, and "mass genocide" on Oct. 14 (video below).

Paul made his comments to South Carolina radio host Vince Coakley during a discussion about the Democratic presidential debate, notes RightWingWatch.org.

Congress just passed a drug testing law that has a lot of people outraged. Do you think this is wrong?

Sanders has identified himself as a "democratic socialist," notes The Washington Post, which Paul tried to demonize:

It amazes me, it actually kind of scares me. And I’ve been spending more time going after Bernie and socialism because I don’t want America to succumb to the notion that there’s anything good about socialism.

Paul failed to mention that Sanders actually supports democratic socialism, which is practiced in non-oppressive Scandinavian nations, notes RawStory.com.

Paul added:

I think it’s not an accident of history that most of the times when socialism has been tried that attendant with that has been mass genocide of people or any of those who object to it.

Stalin killed tens of millions of people. Mao killed tens of millions of people. Pol Pot killed millions of people.

When you have a command economy, when everything is dictated from one authority, that’s socialism, but it doesn’t come easily to those who resist it.

However, The Washington Post reported, "This difference between socialism and democratic socialism is actually kind of important. First of all, Sanders isn't talking about using government to take over large sections of the economy."
