Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont has called for allowing some undocumented immigrants to buy health-care coverage through Obamacare state exchanges in certain cases.

The presidential candidate made his statements during a meeting with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Oct. 1, notes The Washington Post.

Sanders' aides said he does not support allowing undocumented immigrants to receive federal subsidies to buy insurance via Obamacare, but rather allowing them to pay with their own money.

Currently, federal law bans undocumented immigrants from using the state health-care exchanges, but Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois and other lawmakers are sponsoring a bill to open the exchanges up to undocumented immigrants.

Sanders' campaign announced on Oct. 1 that it raised $26 million in donations during the third quarter, coming close to Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, whose campaign said it raised $28 million during the same time period, notes NPR.
