MSNBC host Rachel Maddow called out American conservatives who have a “man-crush” on Russian President Vladimir Putin saying they lack self-respect.
Friday night on “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Maddow pointed out that Putin has become a kind of “North star” to anti-gay activists in America after he signed into law a ban on “homosexual propaganda” last summer.
While some LGBT activists are calling for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, an Illinois anti-gay group called the World Congress of Families is going out of its way to support the games, Maddow pointed out.
“This group in Rockford, IL hosts international meetings every few years to do what they do,” explained Maddow, “to promote natural families that definitely are not gay.”

The World Congress of Families will hold its next meetting in Russia at the Kremlin to show its support for anti-gay legislation enacted there.
Far right groups in Rome are also hanging banners of Putin around the city.
“So as he’s becoming a hero to literally fascist groups, Russia under Putin is also becoming kind of a North Star for anti-gay forces here at home in the United States,” Maddow said.
“Anti-gay activists in this country embracing Russia and the KGB’s own Vladimir Putin. This has been one of the weirder and more unexpected turns in our own domestic politics this year,” she explained.

But it’s not just anti-gay group embracing Putin.
“Both in Congress and in the Conservative media ‘peanut gallery’ have decided real Americans should show how much they love our country by maybe moving to Russia. Because Putin is the kind of strong and decisive leader that we want and we love,” she said.
After his diplomacy in the Syrian crisis and his scathing op-ed in the New York Times, “now a big chunk of the rest of the right in the country have chosen [Putin as] a new hero.”
“It’s one thing for the right to fall in love with its own politicians,” she said, “to make Reagan a saint, Sarah Palin their own collective girlfriend, but the president of Russia, he is not that into you. Seriously, I know you guys hate Pres. Obama, so it feels good to have a man-crush on somebody else, but this guy is the president of Russia. Zip it up, you guys, seriously. Have some respect.”
