Congress’ approval rating has been in the teens since March, but a Gallup poll published on Sept. 28 suggested senators and representatives aren’t just unpopular; they’re seen as out of touch and corrupt by most Americans.

Although 59 percent of the 1,025 adults surveyed believe their elected member of Congress isn’t corrupt, 52 percent believe most members are. Similarly, 47 percent believe the lawmaker representing them isn’t out of touch, but 79 percent said most are.

Americans have been less critical of their representatives than the rest of Congress, but the number of respondents who said they believe their representative deserves to be re-elected dropped to a record low last year.

Negative feelings towards Congress could be at the forefront of people’s minds as a government shutdown looms. Lawmakers have until Sept. 30 to pass a spending package.
