Rep. Jim Clyburn: GOP Legislators Will Look For Reason To Impeach Obama

| by Edward Arnold

During an interview on Tuesday with MSNBC’s "The Ed Show,’’ Democratic Congressmen Jim Clyburn (D-SC) predicted that “there will be some reason found to introduce an impeachment resolution" by Republican legislators.

The Republicans now have control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate after the midterm elections.

Rep. Clyburn says that the Republicans “do have the 218 votes to pass it [impeachment resolution].”

The reason why the GOP wants to accomplish this, according to Rep. Clyburn, is to “keep the country focus on foolishness rather than on what we need to do in order to move an agenda forward.”

In order to successfully impeach a president, the House must pass a simple majority and the Senate must achieve a two-thirds vote.

Regardless if they are successful in actually impeaching the president, Rep. Clyburn's argument is that the GOP will use the process of impeachment to forever rewrite the history books.

“These Republicans have decided that this president must have an asterisk by his name when he leaves office, irrespective of whether or not he gets convicted," Clyburn says.

A key issue that could spark the possibility of an impeachment would be immigration.

“They believe that the president is so committed to this issue that he will, in fact, perform an executive order to get it done and that will be the peg in which they will hang an impeachment resolution.”

The President has acknowledged that if Congress does not pass an immigration bill, he will sign executive orders to fix the broken system. Speaker of the House John Boehner says that an executive order on immigration will “poison the well.”
