The federal government has always paid for vacations of the President of the United States and his family in modern history, but Fox News has been slamming First Lady Michelle Obama for staying in Hawaii for her birthday after the president returned to the White House.

Yesterday, Fox News reporter Ed Henry asked White House spokesperson Jay Carney who was paying for Michelle's vacation, noted Mediaite.com (video below).

“The First Lady stayed behind in Hawaii, and the White House said that was an early birthday present from the President," asked Henry. "Does that mean he’s paying for the flight back, or are the taxpayers paying for it?”

“As with all personal travel, the first family will appropriately fund personal expenses, Ed, and in line with past presidents and first ladies,” stated Carney.

“The First Lady will travel via government aircraft, but you are accurate in your description that this was a, her decision to remain in Hawaii, the President’s suggestion that she remain in Hawaii to spend time with friends ahead of this very big birthday, if you have kids, you know that telling your spouse they can spend a week away from home is a big present," added Carney. "Not that we don’t love our kids.”

For reasons unknown, Henry made no mention that President Bush flew to his home in Crawford, Texas a staggering 77 times, which cost an estimated $17 million, noted The Daily Kos.

Fox News host Greta Van Susteren also ignored President Bush's trips yesterday and slammed Michelle Obama for her extended trip, which Van Susteren said would cost an estimated $800,000, noted CrooksandLiars.com (video below).

“It’s lavish," added Van Susteren. "Is that a good message to send to Americans right now? I think not.”
