Navajo Nation To Take Legal Action Against EPA Over Toxic Spill

| by Sean Kelly

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye announced intentions to take legal action against the Environmental Protection Agency for the massive spill of toxic waste in the Animas River in Silverton, Colorado.

“They are not going to get away with this,” Begaye pledged during his announcement, in which he detailed the worsening of the spill.

“The EPA was right in the middle of the disaster and we intend to make sure the Navajo Nation recovers every dollar it spends cleaning up this mess and every dollar it loses as a result of injuries to our precious Navajo natural resources,” he said.

“I have instructed Navajo Nation Department of Justice to take immediate action against the EPA to the fullest extent of the law to protect Navajo families and resources.”

EPA spokesperson David Ostrander said the agency has taken responsibility for the spill.

“We typically respond to emergencies, we don't cause them, but this is just something that happens when we are dealing with mines sometimes," Ostrander said.
