Mike Huckabee: Americans Should Own Any Weapons They Choose (Video)

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee told voters on Monday that they should be allowed to own whatever kind of weapon they choose without government interference.

During a question and answer session at the Crossroads Shooting Sports range in Johnston, Iowa, a man asked the former Fox News host if people should be allowed to own the same types of weapons that the U.S. military uses, noted Alternet.org (video below).

Huckabee stated:

We should have whatever we choose to have because it's a citizens right. The government shouldn't tell me what the limitations of my self-protection are. If somebody's going to break into my house I want to be at least be as well-armed as they are if not better armed than they are.

My plan is always to have a better arsenal to defend myself than they are going to have to try to attack me. So whatever I must do to do that. And I've been asked on many occasions, "Well, how many firearms do you have." The answer to that is none of your business. It's for me to know and for you to find out.

At the same stop, Huckabee was asked by a reporter about what he thought about Iowa not requiring gun owners to get any hands-on training (video below).

Huckabee replied:

You know, I leave that to the states. Lemme tell you, I'm less worried about someone maybe not being as trained as they could be, because I think ultimately a citizen who is going to arm themselves will want to avail themselves of significant training to become proficient, that just makes sense, for their own sake. But if they don’t, a good guy armed is still better than a good guy unarmed.

Huckabee failed to mention that most people in the U.S. are not killed by a "bad guy," but rather by a family member, friend or someone they knew, per FBI statistics.

According to a 2014 report, up to 100 children are accidentally killed by guns in the U.S. yearly, noted The Guardian.

The Centers For Disease Control reported that 33,636 Americans were killed by firearms in 2013.
