Melania Trump Breaks Tradition At First Lady's Luncheon

| by Jonathan Constante

First Lady Melania Trump broke a long-standing tradition for first ladies by refusing to walk down the runway during the annual First Lady's Luncheon.

The event was held at the Washington Hilton on May 5, Blasting News reported. It was hosted by the Congressional Club and held in honor of Mrs. Trump.

It is considered tradition for the first lady to walk down the runway during the event, but Melania instead waited for everyone to be seated before taking her own her seat.

This isn't the first time Melania has broken tradition. On Feb. 10, Melania was not on hand to host the first lady of Japan, Akie Abe. She also did not immediately move to Washington, D.C., when her husband, President Donald Trump, was elected to office.

She has, however, been slowly easing into her role of first lady. She took part in other annual events such as the Easter egg roll. She was also on hand to honor the teacher of the year.

The First Lady's Luncheon is not planned by the first lady herself, but instead by the Congressional Club, according to Yahoo! Style. The organization was founded in 1908 and is made up of spouses of members of the House, Senate, and Supreme Court.

The annual event was started in 1912 to honor the first lady. It began as a breakfast before turning into a luncheon with anywhere between 1,300 to 1,400 attendees, according to the National First Ladies’ Library.

“Enjoyed spending time with Congressional spouses at today’s annual luncheon,” Melania wrote after the event. “I look forward to working with such an impressive group.”

One of the main attractions of the event are the gift bags. Previous events featured Mary Kay Cosmetics kits, trendy bags, decorative pins, snacks from the organizers’ states, etc. This year's event gifted attendees with scented Deco Candles.

Another gift included was Palm Beach “Southern White House” perfume, a nod to Yoho's home state and the president's Mar-a-Lago home estate, which has been dubbed the Winter White House.

Blue and white bracelets by Etsy vendor Wrapsody Studio were also featured at the event. New Hampshire-based creator Vicki Halsor said she got the order in 2016, before the presidential election. She added that she got the order with an invitation to the luncheon.

“It’s pretty cool except that [Ivanka] is a jewelry maker. She has her own line,” Halsor told SeacoastOnline.com. “It’s intimidating.”
