Clinton's Camp Officially Backs Trump Recount

| by Zara Zhi

Close allies of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have been in contact with a group of advocates calling for the Electoral College to turn against President-elect Donald Trump.

However, Clinton’s camp and the Democratic National Committee have refused to comment on the plan, spearheaded by a group of electors in Colorado and Washington state.

Reportedly, Clinton has not directly spurned efforts by former Green Party nominee Jill Stein to initiate election recounts.

Last-minute recount attempts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan launched by Stein have reportedly irritated Clinton aides, though this information has not publicized.

Clinton’s top campaign lawyer, Marc Elias, said on Nov. 26 that the campaign will back the recounts, without revealing details of how they will be involved, reports NBC News.

Elias wrote a Medium post explaining the decision:

Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves, but now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides.

The group spearheading the anti-Trump movement says they’re working outside of Clinton’s approval or assistance, according to Politico.

“We’re really doing this on our own,” said Polly Baca, a Democratic elector from Colorado and organizer of the “Hamilton Electors,” the group cheering on Republican defections from Trump. “This is something we have to do as electors. This is our responsibility.”

Trump responded to the recount efforts by condemning the Green Party on social media.

“The Green Party scam to fill up their coffers by asking for impossible recounts is now being joined by the badly defeated & demoralized Dems,” he tweeted.

He later announced on Twitter: “The Democrats, when they incorrectly thought they were going to win, asked that the election night tabulation be accepted. Not so anymore!”

Wisconsin election officials are still sorting through Stein’s recount application and timeline for the recount. Her campaign is trying to raise around $7 million for the effort.
