Jimmy Carter Says Trump's Comments Are 'Very Stupid'

| by Amanda Andrade-Rhoades

Former Democratic President Jimmy Carter had some harsh words for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, following his remarks on Mexican immigrants.

"I think he's made some very stupid statements and I think ill-advised statements about immigrants," Carter told CNN anchor  Jake Tapper on "The Lead." "He'll get a tiny little part of the Republican Party support -- the ones that agree with him in an extreme way -- but he's a flash in the pan.”

Carter, a one-term president, has long been the source of ire for Republicans, although many conservatives have also criticized Trump’s comments, which he made while announcing his candidacy, The Huffington Post reported.

“(Mexico is) sending people who have a lot of problems,” Trump said at the time. “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” he added. “And some, I assume, are good people.”

On July 4, Republican front runner Jeb Bush told reporters in New Hampshire that Trump’s views don’t represent the mainstream. "No one suggests that we shouldn't control our borders - everybody has a belief that we should control our borders," he said. "But to make these extraordinarily ugly kind of comments is not reflective of the Republican Party. Trump is wrong on this."
