Jill Stein's Pennsylvania Recount Suffers Major Setback

| by Sean Kelly

Unfortunately for Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, her efforts to bring about a recount in Pennsylvania suffered a big setback after it was revealed that she would not be able to afford the $1 million bond payment needed to do so.

A lawyer for Stein stated in a filing that “petitioners are regular citizens of ordinary means” and were unable to afford the payment ordered by state courts to initiate the recount. The lawyer did indicate, however, that Stein wouldn’t give up on finding other means to convince Pennsylvania courts to move forward with the request.

“This is yet another sign that Pennsylvania’s antiquated election law is stacked against voters,” Stein said of the bond payment, The New York Times reported. “We will pursue every available remedy to ensure Pennsylvanians can trust what happened in this election.”

Lawyers for both the Pennsylvania Republican Party as well as President-elect Donald Trump requested that Stein’s petition be denied, saying she did not uncover any illegal activity. Lawrence Tabas, general counsel for the party, said Stein’s efforts were "completely without merit."

Stein has raised over $6 million for the recount efforts in several states. The Detroit Free Press reported that Stein’s lawyers urged a federal judge to order a recount in Michigan, though his ruling is still pending.

“There's absolutely no evidence here — it's fear and doubt,” Michigan Assistant Attorney General Erik Grill said. “All the votes in Michigan were counted. We have certified election results."

Counsel for Stein released a statement, defending the recount efforts -- particularly in Pennsylvania.

“We are committed to this fight to protect the civil and voting rights of all Americans,” the statement from lead counsel Jonathan Abady read. “Over the past several days, it has become clear that the barriers to verifying the vote in Pennsylvania are so pervasive and that the state court system is so ill-equipped to address this problem that we must seek federal court intervention.”
