Ivanka Trump Sat In For Dad At G20 World Leaders' Table

| by Michael Allen

Ivanka Trump sat in for her father, President Donald Trump, during a meeting of G20 leaders in Hamburg, Germany, on July 8.

Ivanka, who serves as an unpaid assistant to the president, sat next to British Prime Minister Theresa May, notes CBS News.

A Russian official, Svetlana Lukash, tweeted, and later deleted, a picture of Ivanka sitting near German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping and Turkish President Recip Tayyip Erdogan.

A White House official confirmed that the president's daughter, who owns her own fashion brand, sat in for the leader of the free world.

The official told CBS News: "Ivanka was sitting in the back and then briefly joined the main table when the president had to step out. When other leaders stepped out, their seats were also briefly filled by others."

Former NATO ambassador Nicholas Burns, who served under former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, told the Washington Post that the secretary of state should have sat in for the president:

This is a group of the 20 most powerful leaders in the world in the 20 most powerful countries in the world. It conveys that impression and we are a democracy and that’s also important here. Authority is not conferred upon family members because of the president’s position.

The president left the room for other meetings, and left his daughter in his place for a session entitled "Partnership With Africa, Migration and Health."

According to a White House official, the topic of the meeting had shifted to supporting female entrepreneurs in Africa when Ivanka took her dad's seat.

"Yes, it stuck out," a senior European official told the newspaper. "The very fact that his daughter is senior adviser smacks of the kind of nepotism not seen since John F. Kennedy named Robert F. Kennedy as attorney general."

The president came out swinging against critics on Twitter on June 10: "When I left Conference Room for short meetings with Japan and other countries, I asked Ivanka to hold seat. Very standard. Angela M agrees!"

"If Chelsea Clinton were asked to hold the seat for her mother, as her mother gave our country away, the Fake News would say CHELSEA FOR PRES!"

Chelsea fired back in a tweet: "Good morning Mr. President. It would never have occurred to my mother or my father to ask me. Were you giving our country away? Hoping not."

On July 8, Donald Trump Jr. suggested on Twitter that he should have substituted for his father: "If the left is so 'outraged' about Ivanka sitting in for a few minutes, maybe they'd be happier if I sub in for a while??? LMK #MAGA."
