Upset about both a football game and the lack of progress on immigration reform, Washington state Democratic Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon posted a Tweet to hit Arizona where it hurt on both counts.
"Losing a football game sucks," Fitzgibbon Tweeted. "Losing to a desert racist wasteland sucks a lot."
The football game was a win for the Cardinals, who beat the Seattle Seahawks 17-10 on Sunday, ending the Seahawks' 14-game winning streak.
The sore loser then recovered his political tact, deleting the Tweet and posting in its wake, "Upset re hawks loss, and failure of smart immigration reform — shouldn't have conflated the 2 though. Happy holidays, better for both in '14."
Another Washington state representative, Republican J.T. Wilcox, added his own two cents on Twitter, writing that Fitzgibbon's message "makes us all look bad."
Fitzgibbon said in an interview that his Tweet hadn't been serious, at least as far as the trash talk goes.
"If folks are going to take that too seriously, then I'm sorry about that," Fitzgibbon said.
He maintained that Washington residents "have not appreciated" Arizona's treatment of immigrants, citing Arizona’s 2010 Senate Bill 1070, which requires officers to question the immigration status of people suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. The law, which Fitzgibbon said amounts to racial profiling, has been challenged by the federal government and a controversial Supreme Court decision.
