Illegal Immigrant Was Drunk, Driving on Wrong Side of Highway When he Killed Officer in Crash

An off-duty police officer was killed in May when an illegal immigrant, who was driving on the wrong side of the highway, crashed into his car.

Now, Mary Ann Mendoza, the officer’s mother, has written a furious letter to Obama demanding to know why the immigrant had not been previously deported, after being convicted of a crime two decades ago.

The crash that claimed Sgt. Brandon Mendoza’s life occurred in Mesa, Arizona.

The 32-year-old officer had been driving home from work when Raul Silva-Corona, an illegal immigrant, smashed into him after driving down the wrong side of the highway for 35 miles.

Police had received 33 911 calls about Silva-Corona’s driving.

Mendoza was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, and later died.

Silva-Corona died at the scene; his body was so badly burned that authorities could not immediately identify him. Police reported that he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.24 percent (for comparison, the legal limit in Arizona is 0.08 percent).

To make matters worse, Silva-Corona of Chihuahua, Mexico, had previously carried out crimes in Colorado in 1994. Court records indicate that in that instance, he pleaded guilty to a criminal-conspiracy charge; prosecutors dismissed charges of burglary, assault and leaving an accident scene.

Now, Mendoza is demanding to know why, since Silva-Corona had been previously convicted and “the government knew he was in the country illegally, why wasn’t he deported? Why are any of these illegal criminals in this country?”

Aided by a lawyer, she is calling for laws that would keep undocumented immigrants from purchasing and registering vehicles without a driver’s license.

She is also seeking further legislation that would remove undocumented immigrants who are convicted of a crime.

“I have to do something in my son’s memory to stop this kind of thing from happening,” she said.

Mendoza also noted that she has no problems with law-abiding undocumented immigrants.
