Bobby Jindal to Fellow Republicans: Wake Up and Wise Up
In an effort to issue another wake up call to the GOP, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal criticized Republicans for, in a word, being “stupid.”
Jindal outlined in an interview with POLITICO on Monday the shortcomings of his party, and urged his fellow Republicans to develop new and innovative solutions to the nation’s problems.
“We cannot be, we must not be, the party that simply protects the rich so they get to keep their toys,” Jindal said during the interview.
The GOP has taken a battering of criticisms since Mitt Romney’s near 100-point electoral vote loss to President Obama in the 2012 presidential election. The chief concern -- perpetuated by GOP insiders and the media -- is that the GOP is too white, too rich and too out of touch with the everyday American.
One of the most important points Jindal made is that in order to survive, the GOP must stop running against things and start running for things. After Obamacare and the economic stimulus, the GOP blatantly declared itself “not Obama,” and has been battling these (among other) policies ever since, but without championing new and alternative solutions.
Another improvement the GOP should (and likely will) make over the next four years is to appeal to the ever-increasing Hispanic population. Once the GOP realizes that the demeaning “self-deportation” policy will never work out, passing immigration reform to make naturalizing the 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country citizens may help them win back some political clout.
Perhaps more pointers from Jindal and fewer from Karl Rove will give the GOP the energy it needs for a 2016 presidential victory.
