Former Arkansas governor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee recently spoke at the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference where he declared that the U.S. Supreme Court does not have the ultimate say over the controversial issue of legalizing same-sex marriage.
“I respect the courts, but the Supreme Court is only that — the supreme of the courts. It is not the supreme being. It cannot overrule God. When it comes to prayer, when it comes to life and when it comes to the sanctity of marriage, the court cannot change what God has created,” Huckabee said to the crowd, reported Mediaite.
On May 5, Huckabee will be in his hometown of Hope, Arkansas, where he is expected to announce a second run for the White House. During his ill-fated bid for the presidency in 2008, he was able to connect with the more evangelical base of the Republican Party, allowing him to emerge victorious in the crucial Iowa caucus.
Speaking on the issue of whether businesses should have the right to refuse service to gays, Huckabee sided with the rights of the organization.

“Somebody’s got to be willing to take on the institutions that challenge and threaten our ability to believe as we believe, because when religious liberty is lost, all liberty is lost,” Huckabee said, reports CNN.
The U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments this week on whether it is a constitutional right to federally legalize same-sex marriage. While a majority of states have legalized it, a federal mandate would force all 50 states to remove any bans on same-sex marriage.
Also speaking at the conference was former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who will likely also make a bid for the Republican nomination. If Huckabee jumps into the race, he will already have Republican opponents who declared their candidacies before him, including Sens. Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz.
