GOP, Fox News Slam 'Hamilton' Cast For Pence Speech (Video)

| by Michael Allen

Republicans and Fox News hosts are still upset about a speech that the cast of Broadway musical "Hamilton" gave Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Nov. 18 in New York City (video below).

"Hamilton" actor Brandon Dixon, who is African-American, spoke on behalf of the cast to Pence, noted The Huffington Post:

Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at "Hamilton American Musical," we really do. We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us, all of us.

President-elect Donald Trump demanded an apology from the cast via Twitter, which did not happen.

Republican Rep. Sean Duffy of New York was asked on CNN on Nov. 21 about Trump's tweeting, which he has criticized Trump for doing in the past.

Duffy defended Trump's tweeting, and added:

The cast said, "You know what, we're a diverse America," but the cast is not a diverse America in regard to political thought. They all shared the same political viewpoint. And frankly, if you don’t share their viewpoint, they attack you and demonize you. I think liberals and conservatives have to be far more accepting of people who don’t agree with their perspective on the world.

After he criticized the "Hamilton" cast, Duffy illustrated how he was much more accepting of other viewpoints by saying that he loves his mother even though she supports Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

Duffy then slammed the "Hamilton" cast again: "You should be able to go to the theater and have that be a safe space, and not have the one guy with a microphone stop you, and start telling you his political view."

Over on Fox News, "The Five" host Greg Gutfeld said he was not going to flip out, was not a baby and did not need a "safe space."

Gutfeld called the "Hamilton" cast "lame," and imagined a fantasy situation in which a "right wing doctor" has his "head down deep in a pelvic exam" and lectures a patient on how "the left has ruined our nation's inner cities."

Gutfeld then accused the "Hamilton" cast of violating some unidentified "terms of service," and suggested the cast should be disciplined. The New York Times' Patrick Healy tweeted on Nov. 18 that the cast had permission: "@Lin_Manuel Miranda, director Tommy Kail, producer Jeffrey Seller & cast wrote 'Hamilton' statement after learning Mike Pence was coming."

Fox News co-host Eric Bolling also slammed the "Hamilton" cast for exercising their free speech rights on stage, and suggested they do so "on MSNBC where they belong."

Co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle said she would not go see the musical and added that she was "super excited" to keep the $1,400 she would save by skipping the show, which has been perpetually sold out.

Guilfoyle attacked the cast for being "so arrogant and so self-important," and praised Pence.
