Rainer Wendt, chairman of the German Police Union, says Germany must build a wall along its border with Austria. Germany is among the European nations experiencing an influx of Syrian immigrants seeking asylum in the worst refugee crisis since World War II.

Migrants displaced by the Syrian civil war and fleeing from the brutality of Islamic State group have been pouring into Europe, resulting in escalating tensions with locals, Wendt believes. Germany has been among the most accepting countries, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel refusing to put a cap on the number of refugees her nation will accept, according to Deutsche Welle.

Germany is dealing with an influx of 800,000 refugees seeking asylum. The government has imposed transit zones to help manage the number of immigrants who will be accepted. The Social Democratic Party has been critical of these transit zones, claiming they are inhumane. Wendt, however, voiced support of these measures in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

Germany has been leading by example for neighboring countries Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. While those countries admit to being overwhelmed by the massive influx of refugees, they say they will keep their borders open as long as Germany does the same, according to ArkansasOnline.

Wendt says that allowing the high volume of Syrian refugees poses great danger to the German people.

"Our internal [law and] order is at risk ... Someone needs to pull the emergency brake now," he said, according to Deutsche Welle.

Wendt added that a German wall along the Austrian border would encourage neighboring countries to close off their borders as well.

"If we close our borders in this way, Austria will also close the border with Slovenia," he said. "That's exactly the effect we need."

Wendt’s proposal mirrors that of Hungary, which sealed its border to bar Syrian refugees from seeking asylum.

Building walls for border protection has been a hot topic across the globe. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made a proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border the centerpiece of his campaign, Time reports.
