A picture of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his wife dining with Syria President Bashar al-Assad and his wife has surfaced.

The image is reminiscent of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein, whom he would later vilify and attack.

Likewise, Kerry has called Assad a "thug" and a "murderer" (video below).

Kerry also said Assad "has now joined the list of Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein" by using chemical weapons against his own citizens.

But that wasn't the official line in 2009 when this picture of the Kerrys and Assads was taken, noted the Daily Mail.

Kerry was a U.S. Senator when this picture was reportedly snapped in the Naranj restaurant in Damascus, Syria.

At the time, Kerry led a delegation to Syria to discuss ideas for peace in the region. But long before 2009, Syria was (and still is) a supporter of terrorism.

These days, Kerry says with "high confidence" that Assad used sarin nerve gas on the Syrian people.

Kerry warned last Friday that "history would judge us all extraordinarily harshly if we turned a blind eye to a dictator."

No word on who picked up the check for Kerry's dinner with Assad.
