Cruz Falsely Claims Clinton Backs 'Unlimited Abortion'

| by Oren Peleg

In September, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, a former Republican presidential candidate, accused Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton of supporting abortions throughout all three trimesters, including partial-birth abortions. While proven false, GOP nominee Donald Trump again attacked Clinton for supporting what he called abortions through the ninth month of a pregnancy.

“I can also tell you even on the question of the right to life that the views of Hillary Clinton on abortion are radical and extreme,” Cruz told the audience at the Texas Tribune festival in September, reports PolitiFact. “Her views: She supports unlimited abortion on demand up until the moment of birth, including partial-birth abortion, with taxpayer funding.”

During a March 2016 town hall-style event hosted by Fox News, Clinton was asked if she supported all abortions, without exception.

“No. I have been on record in favor of a late pregnancy regulation that would have exceptions for the life and health of the mother,” Clinton began. "I object to the recent effort in Congress to pass a law saying after 20 weeks, you know, no such exceptions, because although these are rare, [moderator] Bret [Baier], they sometimes arise in the most complex, difficult medical situation.”

In fact, more than 90 percent of abortions conducted in 2012 occurred within the first trimester.

Despite Clinton’s record, Trump further accused Clinton at the Oct. 19 presidential debate of supporting late-term abortions.

“I think it's terrible if you go with what Hillary is saying in the ninth month you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby,” Trump said, reports NPR. “Now you can say that that's OK and Hillary can say that that's OK, but it's not OK with me. Because based on what she's saying and based on where she's going and where she's been, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb on the ninth month on the final day. And that's not acceptable.”

Clinton gave her reply at the debate:

Well, that is not what happens in these cases and using that kind of scare rhetoric is just terribly unfortunate. You should meet with some of the women that I've met with -- women I've known over the course of my life. This is one of the worst possible choices that any woman and her family has to make. And I do not believe the government should be making it.

…I've been to countries where governments either forced women to have abortions like they used to do in China or forced women to bear children like they used to do in Romania. And I can tell you the government has no business in the decisions that women make with their families in accordance with their faith with medical advice and I will stand up for that right.
