Donald Trump Defends Planned Parenthood (Video)

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump broke with conservatives of his party and defended Planned Parenthood during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Aug. 11 (video below).

Hannity asked Trump if taxpayers should fund Planned Parenthood, notes Talking Points Memo.

Trump replied:

"So look, let's say there is two Planned Parenthoods in a way. You have it as an abortion clinic. Now, that's actually a fairly small part of what they do, but it's a brutal part and I'm totally against it and I wouldn't do that. They also, however, service women.

"And one of the things that I thought was so terrible when Jeb Bush the other day, as we've said, when he talked about women's health issues, he was so bad, I mean, it's like what is he doing?

"We have to help women, a lot of women are helped. So we have to look at the positives, also, for Planned Parenthood."

Trump was apparently referring to when Bush said earlier this month, "You could take dollar for dollar, although I’m not sure we need a half a billion dollars for women’s health issues…" Bush later clarified that statement after being pounced on by Democrats.

Hannity asked Trump about the government funding organizations that perform abortions, and Trump said he was "totally against the abortion aspect at Planned Parenthood, but I've had many women, I've had many Republican conservative women come up and say, 'Planned Parenthood serves a good function other than that one aspect.'"

Trump told CNN on Aug. 11 that he supported abortion in rape and incest cases, and to save the life of the mother.

In response to Trump's comments, Planned Parenthood spokesman Eric Ferrero told The Daily Beast:

"Donald Trump seems to have realized that banning all abortions, shutting down the government, and defunding Planned Parenthood are extreme positions that are way too far outside the mainstream for even him to take.

"We hope that the rest of the GOP field will wake up and reconsider their extreme and unpopular positions on defunding preventive care, abortion bans and the other economic issues that women and their families care about."
