Donald Trump Doubles Down On Immigration Comments

| by Ethan Brown

Currently ranking No. 2 in national polls and in the middle of controversy over his remarks about Mexican immigrants, Republican presidential candidate gave another candid interview to CNN’s Don Lemon on July 1.

Lemon asked Trump a variety of questions, from his controversial comments to his terminated business relationships with Univision, NBC and Macy’s to who Trump would “fire” in the Republican presidential field, the latter referring to Trump’s trademark line from his television program “The Apprentice.”

When Lemon questioned Trump’s stated statistics from a Fusion article that writes about the violence and rape that women and children go through while illegally crossing the border into the U.S., Trump cited statistics.

“Well if you look at the statistics of people coming, you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything coming in illegally into this country it’s mind-boggling!”

“If you go to Fusion, you will see a story: About 80 percent of the women coming in, you know who owns Fusion? Univision! Go to Fusion and pick up the stories on rape. It’s unbelievable when you look at what’s going on. So all I’m doing is telling the truth,” Trump stated.

The host challenged Trump, stating that the articles are referencing women being raped, but not discussing criminals crossing the border illegally.

“Well, somebody’s doing the raping, Don. I mean, somebody’s doing it,” Trump responded.

The Fusion article says, “Before they can reach the American dream, many migrant women have to survive a Mexican nightmare. A staggering 80 percent of Central American girls and women crossing Mexico en route to the United States are raped along the way, according to directors of migrant shelters interviewed by Fusion.”

Speaking about the Republican presidential field, currently with 14 declared candidates and more to come, Trump challenged the current leader, Jeb Bush.

“I don’t get it. He’s in favor of Common Core, extremely weak on immigration. He thinks people come over for love. I don’t understand why he’s in first place. Maybe it’s the Bush name. Last thing we need is another Bush. But I will tell you, I’m a little surprised he’s in the position he’s in,” Trump said.

Trump also criticized Macy’s for discontinuing its business relationship with him, saying the department store has “folded under pressure.” He also called NBC “weak” for removing him from his position on “The Apprentice” and for its public statement that derided Trump’s initial remarks about illegal immigrants.

Trump would not give names to who he would “fire” from the current Republican presidential field.
