Donald Trump On Burkas: 'You Don't Have To Put On Makeup'

Donald Trump says he thinks some Muslim women may prefer wearing burkas because it keeps them from having to put on makeup.

Trump made the joke about the coverings worn by some Muslim women during a town hall meeting in New Hampshire on Oct. 26, CNN reports.

“I saw a woman interviewed. They said ‘We want to wear them, we've worn them for a thousand years. Why would anybody tell us not?’ They want to!” Trump told the crowd. “What the hell are we getting involved for?”

Trump added that a burka -- which he called a "you know what" -- was easy to wear.

“You don't have to put on makeup, look how beautiful everyone looks," he said. "Wouldn’t it be easier? Right? Wouldn't that be easy?”

Trump then joked that he would prefer wearing a burka over makeup if he was a woman. Making a hand gesture over his face, as though putting on a burka, he said, “I’m ready darling, let’s go.”

While the comments drew laughs from his audience, many took to the Internet to denounce Trump's words, People reports.

Among those who took issue were Casey Quinlan, a writer with Think Progress, who tweeted: “To Trump, women wear a burka or wear a full face of makeup. There isn't a ‘don't wear makeup’ option.”

Kay Steiger, also with Think Progress, wrote on Twitter, “Shocker that Trump misses the point on burkas.”
