Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was booed during his speech at the Republican National Convention on July 20 (video below).

Cruz was booed because he refused to endorse GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, reports ABC News.

Instead of endorsing his former rival, Cruz advised the rowdy crowd: "Please, don't stay home in November. If you love our country and love your children as much as I know you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution."

Some GOP delegates chanted, "Endorse Trump!" and Cruz responded, "I appreciate the enthusiasm of the New York delegation,” which seemed to fuel some boos.

Cruz recalled how his mother was the first in his family to go to college, and his dad fled from Cuba to Texas with "just one hundred dollars sewn into his underwear."

Some in the crowd started chanting, "We want Trump! We want Trump!"

The boos grew louder as Cruz urged the crowd to fight for freedom and protect their God-given rights, "even of those with whom we don't agree."

Some in the crowd started shouting, "Endorse Trump! Endorse Trump!"

During the end of Cruz's speech, Trump appeared on the side where he clapped and waved at people.

According to CBS News, Cruz mentioned Trump only once: "I want to congratulate Donald Trump on winning the nomination last night. And like each of you, I want to see the principles that our party believes prevail in November."

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida did not appear at the RNC in person, but told the crowd via video recording: "After a long and spirited primary, the time for fighting each other is over. It's time to win in November."

Rubio's decision to stay in Florida might have been a safer one than Cruz’s choice.

CNN reporter Manu Raju tweeted: "HEIDI CRUZ escorted out by security as crowd gets angry at Cruz for his speech. One Trump supporter shouting 'Goldman Sachs!' at her."

Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a Cruz supporter, told ABC News via text that he escorted Cruz's wife out because "it was volatile and the Trump folks were physically approaching and confrontationally yelling."
