Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas advocated spanking a young protester who interrupted his rally in La Porte, Indiana, May 1 (video below).

According to The Hill, the juvenile protester shouted, "You suck!" at Cruz, who replied:

All right, apparently there’s a young man who’s having some problems. Thank you, son. I appreciate you sharing your views. One of the things that hopefully someone has told you, is that children should actually speak with respect.

Imagine what a different world it would be if someone told Donald Trump that years ago. In my household, when a child behaves that way, they get a spanking. That really comes down to who we are as a people. Do we remember who we are?

The crowd erupted with cheers.

Cruz also called for spanking Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (at the ballot box) in January over the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, notes the Washington Post.

"We do know Hillary told her daughter Chelsea, 'Well, gosh, I knew it was a terrorist attack, while we were out telling the American people it wasn't,'" Cruz told an audience in Iowa at the time. "You know I'll tell you, in my house, if my daughter Catherine, the five-year-old, says something she knows to be false, she gets a spanking."

"Well, in America, the voters have a way of administering a spanking," Cruz added.

According to the University of Chicago‘s General Social Survey, general support for spanking in the U.S. has gone from about 84 percent in 1986 down close to 70 percent in 2010 and 2012, noted FiveThirtyEight in 2014.

The study also found that, on average, born-again Christians (Cruz's main demographic) are 15 points higher (80 percent) than the general population (about 65 percent) when it comes to supporting spanking.

When broken down by political parties, Republicans have shown 80 percent in favor of spanking, while 65 percent of Democrats have supported corporal punishment since 2008.
