Colin Powell Reveals He's Voting For Clinton

| by Lauren Briggs

Hillary Clinton has gained the support of another high-ranking Republican, as fellow former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced on Oct. 25 that he intends to cast his vote for Clinton as an alternative to Donald Trump, whose candidacy Powell denounced.

"I am voting for Hillary Clinton," Powell said at the Long Island Association, as recounted to The New York Times by the association's spokesman, Matthew Cohen.

Powell, who served in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, said that Clinton had leadership skills and good experience for the job. He also contrasted her to Donald Trump.

"He said he would support Hillary Clinton and he also elaborated on several reason[s] why he felt that Donald Trump was not the right candidate," recounted Long Island Association board member Paule Pachter. "He spoke about his inexperience, he spoke about the messages that he's sending out every day to his supporters, which really paints our country in a negative light across the globe with all our allies."

Powell's endorsement comes after he lobbed harsh criticisms at Clinton in September for her email scandal. Clinton compared Powell's email habits to her own, to which Powell replied, "Her people have been trying to pin it on me," reports People magazine.

Powell also earlier wrote in leaked emails that Clinton "screws up with hubris" everything that she touches, adding "I would rather not have to vote for her," despite respecting her and counting her as a friend, the Daily Beast reports.

But the longtime Republican has struggled with his party and supported the Democratic presidential nominee in the last three elections.

"I'm still a Republican because I believe in a strong defense, because I believe in the entrepreneurial spirit that is so typical of the Republican Party in the past," Powell said in Sept. 2015, according to CNN.
