Was Mitt Romney a Vietnam Draft Dodger?
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney talks tough when it comes to foreign policy. He has slammed President Obama for bringing U.S. troops home and recently gave the greenlight to Israel if they wanted to launch a preemptive attack on Iran, under his presidency.
But what about Romney's own military service or lack of?
Romney supported the Vietnam War, but did not enlist. Instead, he got draft deferments and worked as a missionary ["minister of religion"] for 31 months, for the Mormon church, in France, one of those "European countries" that he often tries to tie President Obama to.
The Associated Press reports that after Romney completed his missionary service in 1969, but he asked for and got more deferments, a total of four, successfully staying out of the war that claimed over fifty thousand American lives.
However, when he got into politics, Romney gave dual recollections of those days.
According to the Maddow Blog:
Many years later, in 1994, Romney said, "It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam, but nor did I take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft." That wasn't true -- he took several steps to remove himself from the eligibility pool.
By 2007, Romney, a presidential candidate, argued. "I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there, and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam."
While some criticize Romney's lack of military service or even call it draft dodging, it's worth noting that President Bush did not serve in Vietnam either, but joined the texas National Guard, and he still defeated Vietnam veteran Sen. John Kerry in 2004.
Vice President Dick Cheney got five deferments to stay out of Vietnam and Republican advisor and SuperPac founder Karl Rove got three.

Romney is a chickenhawk lying
Romney is a chickenhawk lying SOB and a coward to boot. As a VietNam vet I would have loved to have seen all of the chickenhawks (Bush, Cheney, Romney Boehner Limbaugh McConnell Gingrich O'Reilly Senor Bolton Nugent the list is to long to go on)in a foxhole with M-16's with incoming!!! I bet they would all be crying for their mommies and deficating all over themselves!
Hey Michael Allen, George W.
Hey Michael Allen,
George W. didn't dodge the draft (nor did Romney, as he wasn't drafted) and W. had a Fighter Jet strapped to his ass during his service: flying Fighter Jets is a DEADLY SERIOUS business even during training, so the obvious implication you made about his service not being 'real' is sheer hyperbole!
I must add that Kerry's service was looked down upon because of the LIES he told about his service and the FACT that he threw all his medals away like garbage, which INSULTS the men who earned those same citations!!!
Kerry's Cambodian Christmas is one of the reasons so many people refused to vote for him, along with his Hard Left policies and positions.
Lastly, allow me to point out that while the Democrat controlled media continues to lambaste Romney about his wealth, they said nary a derogatory word about Kerry and his wife Heinz's fortunes......no, that would be doing something 'dirty', 'unsavory', 'reprehensible' wouldn't it?
The average American is wise to the fact that the Left Wing Media is more concerned with Romney's money than they are with what Obama is doing with all the TAXPAYERS' money he's flinging around like confetti!!!!
Get clued in jocko, November approaches!
Ya... and the latest polls
Ya... and the latest polls show Romney slipping further behind Obama. There is still a great deal of time to "swift boat" Obama, but it seems that Romney is far more vulnerable.
Romney has flipped positions more than any other candidate I have ever seen in any party. The only way you could support him is as a vote against Obama because Romney has done nothing to earn the public trust.
Romney did not dodge the draft, but he did dodge service, as did GWB by missing duty on the National Guard. When I was in the service, that would be at least office hours for an enlisted person, and potentially conduct unbecoming for an officer. However, GWB got away with it. At least Kerry showed up and did his time in the field regardless of the other controversies.
There's a little over 90 days until the only poll that matters. Whoever wins, it won't be by much of a margin. Right now, the money is on Obama by a hair.
