Video: Woman Falsely Claims She Got a Free 'Obama Phone,' GOP Repeats Debunked Myth

| by Michael Allen

Earlier this week, DrudgeReport.com posted a story with the headline 'OBAMA HAS MY VOTE, HE GAVE ME A FREE PHONE.'

The link from the DrudgeReport.com headline went to a YouTube video (below) where an unidentified woman said that Pres. Obama gave her a free phone and that's why she is voting for him.

In response, Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show: "So these are the people that don’t like Romney because of what he said about 47%? No, these are the 47%! She knows. She knows how to get this free Obama phone. She knows everything about it. She may not know who George Washington is or Abraham Lincoln, but she knows how to get an Obama phone."

However, there is no such thing as a free 'Obama Phone.' The urban myth that Pres. Obama created a federal program in which poor people got free phones for voting has been circulating since 2009.

ThinkProgress.org reports that there is a government program that provides "low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush."
